8th Grade – Georgia Studies Syllabus

Eric Emmet

eemmet@gcbe.org

Welcome to Mr. Emmet’s 8th grade Georgia Studies class.  After two years of being introduced to the geography, government, economics, culture, and history of places all around the world, you now have the opportunity to learn all about the place where you live, the great state of Georgia!  This syllabus is a summary of what you can expect in this course in terms of the content, needed materials, grading formula, and discipline policy.  The bottom portion of this syllabus should be signed by both the student and his/her parent or guardian and returned to me by Wednesday, August 10, 2016.

Content:

The content of this course is established by the Georgia Department of Education.  Our curriculum is defined by the Georgia Performance Standards which can be found at: https://www.georgiastandards.org

Materials:

Throughout the year, I will provide students with a wide array of materials, including: notes, maps, charts, and other study guides.  It is requested that the students supply themselves with notebook paper, regular pencils, colored pencils, index cards, and a folder or small binder in which to organize and keep their classwork and study materials.  Some assistance is available in meeting this requirement in cases of special need.

Assignments:

Students will often complete their daily assignments in class; however, occasional homework assignments will be given.  Students are asked to regularly review the study materials provided in class in preparation for quizzes and tests.  Information regarding homework and dates of quizzes and tests will be provided on this webpage.

Grading:

The grading scale following the following distribution:

Tests/Projects: 40%

Daily/Homework: 30%

Quizzes: 20%

End of term exam: 10%

Expectations:

As posted and discussed in our classroom, I have a straightforward set of expectations in this class:

·         All students are to respect themselves, their fellow students, and their teachers.

·         Give the best effort.  Get the best result.

Discipline:

The discipline procedures for Georgia Studies are in keeping with the grade-wide policy that was outlined in the letter sent home earlier this year by all 8th grade homeroom teachers.  While every effort will be made on my part create an environment that proactively encourages good behavior, there may be instances that will require me to follow the following steps:

1) Documented Warning

2) Silent Lunch

3) Parental Contact via phone and/or email – possible request for conference

4) Office referral

Some instances may require these steps to be accelerated, but every effort will be made on my part to provide opportunities for each student to correct his/her own behavior sooner rather than later.

Additional Resources:

An ample amount of study materials and notes will be provided and created in class, but you may also find the following online resources to be helpful as well:
