The AMS School Governance Council met in regular session on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 3:30 P.M.

The meeting was held at Ashworth Middle School, 333 Newtown Road, Calhoun, GA, 30701.

School Governance Council Members present:

·         Scott McClanahan, Shannon Wyatt, Randy Wheat, Christy Vaughn, Shawna Cox, Beth Beutel, and Terry Swaim.

·         Guests: Andrea Salmon, Marilark Murray, and Lisa Pritchett

School Governance Council Members absent:

·         none

Seven members were present, representing a quorum.

1. Call to Order

Mr. McClanahan called the meeting to order at 3:30 P.M.

2. Pledge of Allegiance

            Mr. McClanahan led the pledge of allegiance to the United States flag.

3. Approval of Agenda

            Mr. McClanahan distributed the agenda posted pursuant to the Open Meetings Act.

            Moved, seconded, and carried that the school governance council approve the agenda as

            VOTE: (X) Yes     ( ) No

4. Approval of Minutes

            Mr. McClanahan distributed and read the minutes of the September 10, 2013, meeting for review.

7. Old Business

            Mr. McClanahan read the minutes from the last meeting. The council did not discuss any old business.  

8. New Business

·                 Surveys/CCRPI- Mr. McClanahan

·         School Climate Surveys: Georgia School Personnel Survey (Staff)/Georgia Student Health Survey (Students)-Data from the Georgia School Personnel Survey (GSPS) will be used to calculate the School Climate Star Rating within the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) to determine a correlation between the student responses on the Georgia Student Health Survey and school personnel responses on the GSPS.

·         Parent Surveys (link on website, text messages, emails)

·         Ashworth Middle School will host its Student of the Month Breakfast on the last Wednesday of each month. The next breakfast will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2013 @ 7:20 AM in the AMS Media Center.

·         Student of the Month Breakfast - October 30, 2013

·         Student of the Month Breakfast – November 20, 2013

·         Ashworth sponsored Coffee and Conversation on Friday, November 22nd. It took place from 7:20 – 8:20 AM for parents/guardians to provide a platform to meet, and to provide input for concerns/growth at AMS (12 parents attended). Another breakfast has been planned for the 2nd semester.

·         The AMS 6th grade band members held a performance for parents/guardians on the evening of Thursday, October 3rd.

·         The AMS Band will hold a Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 10th @ 7:00 PM.

·         The AMS Chorus will hold a Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 17th @ 6:30 PM.

·         The AMS Show Choir, and the AMS Band will be participating in the Calhoun Christmas Parade on Thursday, December 12th.  

·         The AMS PTSA held a General Membership Meeting on December 3rd @ 6:00 PM. Also, the AMS Show Choir gave a wonderful performance.

·         Once again, Ashworth Middle School won the middle school division of the annual Unity Run with the most participants.


·         Upcoming Events:

·         December 6- School wide Spelling Bee for all ASM classroom winners and then the winners will advance to the district and regional levels per Mrs. Murray.

·         February 14- Valentine’s Dance

·         Staff Trainings Completed on November 7, 2013

·         CPR

·         Differentiation (process, content, product)

·         Bullying Procedures

·         Safety Procedures

  • Math/Literacy Updates
    • Lisa Pritchett – STEM2CORE (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) – Janice Mosely, Shawna Cox, Darrell Westberry, and Robin Fox are the representatives for STEM2Core. These representatives share information with colleagues at AMS. Also, all mathematics and English teachers from each grade level attended data meetings to discuss student needs.
    • Andrea Salmon - Striving Readers Grant, IHOP writing, Huddle House Student Writing on display – This grant will provide professional development and resources according to each schools’ needs. The grant will be dispersed between the elementary and middle schools according to student numbers. The deadline for the grant is December 18, 2013.
  • Testing-M. Murray
    • Test Security – posted on the school website,
    • Cut Score Changes – domain weights changed for mathematics and English and teachers have been notified.

·         Current and Upcoming Tests – Georgia Writing Assessment (GWA) Jan. 22, 2014 and the makeup day is Jan. 23; Access Test for English Language Learners (ELLs) for progress monitoring is Jan. 21, – March 4, 2014

·         Gary Grubb - Assistant Principal - Extra Curricular Activities Updates

·         Feel free to continue to provide input/recommendations/suggestions for Title I school documents for 2013-2014 - Mrs. Murray contributed that Title I documents were made available for parent input. As of today, no parent input has been provided.
